Efficient Sewing Project Preparation: Cut, Bundle, and Streamline

I love to choose and cut fabric while watching TV or videos. That first step of possibility toward the finish projects is just so fun. Yesterday, I had a backpack in mind that I wanted to make soon, so I started digging through my abundant stash. Of course, as I searched for just the right fabric for the backpack, I kept discovering more fabrics I wanted to make something with. I ended up cutting not just the Ava backpack by Sallie Tomato, but a few other things as well. This basket has all of the fabric I cut…

It may not look like it, but there are THIRTEEN sewing projects in there. Have I bitten off more than I can chew? How long will this keep me busy?

The answer – first of all, no, I can knock all of this out, and it will probably happen faster than you think. Second, I have a process for being productive, and I will share it with you in this post.

Aside from having a major cutting session while streaming some of my favorite entertainment (last night it was Olympic women’s gymnastics), I make sure I cut all of the fabric for a particular project at the same time, and I bundle it together with the pattern. I also decide if I want to use the fabric for another project. One thing leads to another as you will see!

So now, my next step is to pull out my bolts of interfacing and start the cutting and fusing! Then I will quilt all the pieces that need quilting. THEN, I will start sewing. Several of these that are multiple versions of the same pattern will be done assembly-line style. I also try to avoid changing thread whenever I don’t need to, so sometimes I organize things that way.

So, once I get the rest of the preliminary tasks done, which project should I try to finish first?
