My youngest child and only daughter just graduated from high school. While I don’t sew as much for her anymore as I once did, there are some things which she will happily let me make. One of these is a dress. She’s not a big fan of dresses, but she will wear one if the occasion calls for it.
Senior honors night was one of those dress occasions, and for this, we busted out a knit dress I made her for Easter last year. It’s a wrap dress style from Farbenmix in a cotton-lycra blend knit. It’s comfortable, so she grudgingly wore it (and admitted later that I was right about an honors night being a dress-up occasion.)
For her other senior events, she needed a white dress/graduation dress. Her high school did not require white, but the cheer gym did. At the all-star cheer gym she has been with since she was barely six years old, the tradition is that everyone wears black for the end of year banquet. However, graduating seniors wear white. This dress got worn for the cheer banquet where she was honored as the only graduating senior in the gym this year, senior Sunday at church, and of course, graduation.
I made Know Me 2091, a fit and flare dress with godets, in a white scuba knit from Fabric Mart. This is a terrific fabric to sew with, but still needs either underlining or carefully chosen undergarments. In this case, a long-line sports bra and bike shorts from Aerie offline in a light beige was just the right choice. If you have a picky teen who doesn’t really want to wear a slip, a set like this is perfect.

I really loved making her this dress. I definitely loved seeing her wear it to these special events. Even better, however, is that at 18, she still trusts me to dress her at times.
This little girl is the reason I started sewing a few months before she was born. I am pretty proud that my sewing skills have grown up with her. Coming soon – the sewing I did for her graduation trip to Disney World!
