I have a newly finished quilt – Housecat by Eye Candy Quilts. For this project, I decided to try a quilt as you go method since it is so large. I don’t own a longarm, and while I occasionally do have quilts finished that way, it’s expensive. This pattern, with its sashing, and cornerstones, seemed ideal for the technique.
I quilted and squared all of the housecat blocks, and then I started in on the connections. That’s where it started getting wonky. In particular, I had issues keeping things squared up despite careful measuring, cutting, and sewing with the walking foot.
Here’s the back – including three places where I had to make small repairs after accidentally cutting into the sashing.

If you squint at it, the quilt is fine, and I still like it. I like it because not only does it involve a color scheme I enjoy and cats, but also because of all the difficulties. I won’t claim this is a masterpiece. I wish I could always make perfected projects, but the reality is that the art of sewing is not always about perfection.

I even made a small matching pillow:

I think it’s easy to get obsessed with whether or not we feel a certain project is “good enough” to share with the world – especially during an age of social media. At the end of the day, I know this quilt isn’t destined for a blue ribbon or a thousand likes. It’s a small piece of happiness made from love and a desire to push my skills. That’s a win as far as I am concerned.
